Wrestling Team Splits Day One Action at Virginia Duals
BLOOMSBURG-- The Bloomsburg University wrestling team split its day one action at the 2007 Virginia Duals Wrestling Tournament.
The Huskies, seeded eighth in the event, won their opening match of the day with ease beating Duquesne, 45-6. Bloomsburg picked up four pins along the way, including one by heavyweight Mike Spaid (Perkiomenville/Boyertown) in just 1:28. The Huskies also added a technical fall by Ricky Schmelyum (New Oxford/Bermuda Springs) and a major decision by Dennis Bermudez (Saugerties, NY/Suagerties).
In the quarterfinals, the Huskies lost to top-seeded Penn State, 22-9. The Nittany Lions opened the match with five straight wins before Schmelyum earned a 3-2 decision to make it 15-3. After a win by Penn State at 174, Nate Shirk (Middleburg/Middleburg) posted a 7-3 win at 184, while 20th ranked Mike Spaid beat number 13 ranked Aaron Anspach, 3-1, in overtime. Also, the Huskies' Mike Sees, ranked 10th, lost 5-2 a decision to second ranked Mark McKnight in a battle of ranked wrestlers.
The Huskies, 5-6, will return to action on Saturday against a yet to-be-determined opponent.
